Looking south from Randolph Street, this view shows the stretch of State Street that had become the heart of Chicago's retail trade by the early 1900s. The Marshall Field & Company store occupied much of the surrounding blocks and drew shoppers from across the Midwest, and streetcars and crowds of pedestrians filled the roadway. The picture survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, one of many American city views the Detroit Publishing Company made to document urban life for publishers and travelers.
