A lake steamer named *United States* glides past the State Street bridge on the Chicago River, its hull marked for the Michigan City to Chicago line. Vessels like this carried passengers and freight across the southern end of Lake Michigan, and each trip had to pass the river's drawbridges, which swung open to admit boats into the city. The Detroit Publishing Company made the glass negative between about 1900 and 1915, when it was recording American cities and waterways for sale as views. The scene shows how closely shipping, bridges and downtown streets were packed together along the river.
