The steamer *United States* is named in the record only by its title, so its route and owners are not documented here. Early twentieth-century Chicago's river and harbor handled a steady traffic of passenger and freight steamers linking the city with Great Lakes ports, and a view like this preserves that working waterfront. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many city and landscape views for tourists and commercial buyers in these years, made the 8 by 10 inch glass negative, whose large format keeps fine detail in the vessel and its surroundings.
