The steamer *City of Chicago*, a side-wheel vessel, is the subject here, and it points to how much passenger and freight traffic once moved across the Great Lakes. Side-wheelers, with large paddle wheels mounted on each side of the hull, were a familiar sight on Lake Michigan and other inland waters in the decades around 1900. This view is a glass dry plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded American cities, waterways and transportation in the early twentieth century. The 8 by 10 inch format gave the company's views a sharp detail that made them popular.
