This view looks north up Michigan Avenue from Van Buren Street in downtown Chicago, a stretch of the Loop where commercial buildings lined the avenue as the city grew quickly around the turn of the twentieth century. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued large-format views of American cities and landscapes for travelers and buyers of picture books, made the negative sometime between 1900 and 1910. A "Behm" notation appears on the negative, and the record gives the company's catalog number, which helps researchers trace the scene's place among the firm's Chicago views. The storefronts and street traffic show how the avenue looked before later redevelopment.
