Madison Avenue and the Brevoort Hotel, both named in the title, anchor this view of a Chicago street from the years before 1915. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made many commercial views of American towns and cities in that period, took the picture on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative. Chicago had rebuilt quickly after the 1871 fire and grew into a major rail and commerce hub, so streets lined with hotels, shops and offices were a common sight. The negative's catalog number and its later gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949 help trace how it reached the Library of Congress.
