The Hotel Sherman in this view is a Chicago hostelry whose name had been attached to a succession of buildings downtown, so the photograph captures a particular stage in that long history. The image is an 8 x 10 inch glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which between the 1890s and the 1920s produced large numbers of views of American cities, resorts and scenery, many of them sold to railroads and travel promoters. Dated to roughly 1910 to 1920, it records the downtown streetscape as hotels were becoming central to the city's commercial and travel life. The negative later entered the collection of the State Historical Society of Colorado and reached the Library of Congress as a gift in 1949.
