Facing Grant Park on South Michigan Avenue, the Blackstone was one of Chicago's most prominent hotels when it opened in 1910, designed by the local firm Marshall and Fox. The building reflected the city's growing appetite for polished, classically styled hotels serving business travelers and visitors. This picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country to document cities, rail lines and landmarks in the years before the First World War. Because it survives on glass, the negative preserves fine detail of the hotel's exterior from roughly the period when it was new.
