The Blackstone Hotel stood on South Michigan Avenue, looking out across Grant Park toward the lake, and this view captures its position at the edge of the city's lakefront. The hotel opened in 1910, and the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that issued many photographs of American cities and landscapes in the early twentieth century, made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative sometime between 1910 and 1920. Its wide framing shows how the hotel's tall facade anchored a boulevard that was becoming one of Chicago's most prominent addresses.
