Bear Trap Dam at Lockport, Illinois, regulated the water moving through the Chicago Drainage Canal, and this view shows the water pouring over its gates. The canal, completed around 1900, reversed the flow of the Chicago River so that sewage and waste were carried away from Lake Michigan, which had been Chicago's drinking water source. Detroit Publishing Company photographers worked across the country around 1908, documenting engineering works and scenic places for sale as postcards and prints, and this glass negative captures the scale of the canal's public-works engineering.
