This view shows the Illinois Central station in Chicago, the railroad's main passenger terminal in the city, which handled a steady stream of commuter and long-distance travelers in the early 1900s. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued views of American towns and rail lines for sale as prints and postcards, probably made this glass negative between 1900 and 1910. The record suggests the photographer may have been Hans Behm, and two variant negatives survive, which points to more than one exposure of the scene. The station's surroundings, with its tracks and lakefront approach, show how central railroads were to Chicago's growth at the time.
