Three glass negatives, joined into one wide view, show the Illinois Steel Works at South Chicago with its mills and harbor stretching along the lake shore. The panorama format suits a site this large, since a single frame could take in the furnaces, rail lines and docks that made the works one of the biggest steel operations in the country. The Illinois Steel Company became part of the newly formed United States Steel Corporation in 1901, so the photograph captures the plant at a time of major industrial consolidation. Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of American cities and industry, issued the image, and its wide scenes are a useful record of how heavy industry looked around 1900.
