This 8-by-10-inch glass negative records a depot of the Illinois Central Railroad in Chicago, a line whose lakefront route and passenger stations shaped the city's south side in the years around 1900. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued photographs and color prints of American cities and railroads, catalogued it as number 034703, and the record notes a possible attribution to photographer Hans Behm, though that remains unconfirmed. The negative's broken and taped upper-left corner is a reminder that such plates were handled heavily in the darkroom and the warehouse. Railroad stations like this one were often the first sight of the city for arriving travelers.
