This wood engraving shows the Illinois Central Railroad's facilities in Chicago, with grain elevators rising beside the tracks, a pairing that captures how the city's rail and grain trades had grown together by the late 1850s. The Illinois Central, chartered with a large federal land grant, pushed its line into Chicago in the 1850s, and the company's stations and yards became part of the waterfront that moved Midwestern grain east. The image appeared in Harper's Weekly, the New York illustrated newspaper that brought such scenes of growing American cities to a national readership. Catalog notes for the print are unverified, so the exact vantage point and date should be checked against other sources.
