The dome is the feature that sets this view apart. It crowns the Elks National Memorial Building, a lakefront structure that the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks built in Chicago as a memorial to members who served in the First World War. The fraternal order raised the building as a gathering place and tribute, and its monumental scale reflected the civic ambitions of Chicago in the mid-1920s. This print, dated to about 1926 on its caption card, was copyrighted by photographer E.L. Fowler, whose work documents the city's architecture of that decade. The date and attribution come from the caption card and have not been independently verified.
