Two Michigan Avenue landmarks anchor this view: the Railway Exchange Building on the left and the Peoples Gas Company Building on the right, both in Chicago's downtown Loop. The Railway Exchange, completed in the early 1900s, housed railroad offices and was known for its ornate facade and its place in the city's commercial core. The photograph is a glass plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American cities and landscapes in the years before and after 1910. Its record also shows the image was a later gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado.
