The monument in this view honors Stephen A. Douglas, the Illinois senator known as the "Little Giant," who lost the 1858 Senate race to Abraham Lincoln and then debated him that year. Douglas died in 1861, and his tomb on Chicago's South Side, completed in the early 1880s, became a landmark of the city's effort to honor him. This glass-plate negative is one of many views the Detroit Publishing Company made of American cities and monuments around 1900 to 1910, when the firm was producing photographs for sale as postcards and illustrated books.
