Here a mounted bronze of Gen. John A. Logan rises above a crowd of visitors who sit on the grass in the foreground, a relaxed scene for a monument. Logan commanded Union volunteers during the Civil War and later served as a Republican senator from Illinois. He also led the Grand Army of the Republic, the veterans' organization that helped popularize Decoration Day, the forerunner of Memorial Day. The stereo card, published by the New York firm Strohmeyer & Wyman, dates to about 1900, when such views were widely sold to people who wanted to see the city's monuments in three dimensions.
