Looking east from State Street, this stereograph follows Madison Street as it runs down toward Lake Michigan, a view from the busy center of the city's downtown grid. The card carries a copyright notice in the name of H.C. White, a firm known for producing large numbers of stereoviews in the early twentieth century. Stereo cards like this were meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which fused two slightly offset photographs into a single image with apparent depth, so street scenes felt close enough to step into. The date of about 1905 and the location details come from the original caption card and have not been independently verified.
