Looking east along Madison Street from State Street, this stereograph shows a Chicago street of the early 1900s, when the Loop was filling with multistory commercial buildings and the streetcar lines carried heavy foot traffic. Stereo views like this one were sold in pairs of nearly identical images, and this card was copyrighted by H.C. White, a firm that produced many such scenes of American cities for home parlor viewers. The record notes that its date and details come from the original caption card and have not been independently verified, so the exact year is best read as approximate, around 1905.
