The Madison Street entrance of the Chicago and North Western Railway's passenger terminal shows the side of the station that faced the city's busy downtown streets, where commuters and travelers came and went on foot and by streetcar. The railway ran its main Chicago depot near Canal and Madison streets, and by the early 1910s the building was a major point of arrival for the region's rail passengers. The picture was made around 1912 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its widely sold views of American cities, landscapes and railroads. Its record also notes that the image was registered for copyright, which was common for commercial views of this period.
