Few retailers were as closely tied to Chicago as Marshall Field's, and this view looks at the store's street entrance, where shoppers passed between the city sidewalk and the goods inside. The business traced its roots to a dry goods firm founded in 1852 and grew into one of the largest department stores in the country. The picture is a glass plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, which recorded American cities and commercial streets around 1907 to 1910, so the fine detail of the storefront and street life of the period is preserved.
