Marshall Field's flagship store on State Street in Chicago is the subject of this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, which records the building and the busy street in front of it. The retailer was one of the largest department store operations in the country, and its State Street building, designed by Daniel Burnham and completed around 1907, helped anchor the city's downtown shopping district. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many such views, used large glass plates to capture street scenes in fine detail. The record lists Hans Behm as a possible photographer, so that attribution remains uncertain.
