Few pictures of early college football show the whole crowd at once, and this panoramic print does. It records the Western Championship game between the University of Michigan and the University of Chicago at Marshall Field, where the record gives an attendance of about 27,000. Panoramic views like this were a specialty of the Chicago firm George R. Lawrence Co., which registered the photograph for copyright in December 1905. Its long, narrow format lets you see the stands packed along the sidelines and the sheer scale of a crowd that had come to see the Big Ten's leading teams compete in the Midwest's major football rivalry.
