Carlisle Indian Industrial School's football team and the University of Chicago met on the gridiron at Marshall Field on November 23, 1907, and this panoramic print captures the whole field and its crowd in a single wide frame. Carlisle, coached by Glenn "Pop" Warner and featuring players such as Jim Thorpe, was among the most closely watched teams of its day, and its games against major eastern and midwestern programs drew large crowds. Panoramas like this one, made by commercial studios such as George R. Lawrence Co., were popular souvenirs of big games, and they now give a useful view of early twentieth-century stadium design and spectator life.
