Taken at Orchestra Hall on February 5, 1907, this wide group portrait shows the Chicago Orchestra, the ensemble Theodore Thomas founded in 1891 and led until his death in 1905. Frederick Stock took over the podium after Thomas, and the orchestra's home was the hall that opened in 1904 on Michigan Avenue. The print was made by the Geo. R. Lawrence Company, a Chicago firm known for banquet camera photographs, which swept a lens across a gathering to record everyone on one long gelatin silver plate.
