Seiji Ozawa, the Japanese-born conductor, is caught mid-gesture in this promotional portrait, a publicity image likely produced by RCA Victor Records around 1970. Ozawa became music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1969 and remained in that post until 1972, when he took the Boston Symphony Orchestra job. The picture reflects how record labels marketed their artists in that era, pairing a conductor's dramatic stage presence with the recordings that carried his name to a wide audience.
