A bird's-eye view of the Union Stock Yards on Chicago's South Side, this stereograph card was issued by the Standard Scenic Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, around 1906. Opened in 1865, the yards were the center of the city's livestock trade and meatpacking, and they drew national attention that same year when Upton Sinclair's novel *The Jungle* portrayed the conditions there. Paired images like this were meant for a stereoscope, which gave viewers a sense of depth and made a sprawling industrial site feel close at hand.
