Cattle pour down the chutes and ramps of the Union Stock Yards on Chicago's South Side in this stereograph, a scene that once made the city a byword for livestock. The yards opened in 1865 and grew into one of the largest meatpacking hubs in the world, with rail lines feeding animals in and carrying dressed meat out. Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, sold stereo cards like this one by the thousands around 1928, so the picture was made for viewers to see in three dimensions through a hand viewer. Look closely at the crowded pens and the men working the gates, which show how much manual labor the trade depended on.
