The stereograph's title places the viewer in the heart of the Great Union Stock Yards, the sprawling livestock complex on Chicago's South Side that was among the largest meatpacking centers in the world in the early 1900s. Issued by the Kelley & Chadwick firm around 1909, the card was made for the stereoscope viewers that were a common parlor entertainment of the era, pairing two nearly identical photographs so the scene appeared three-dimensional. Cards like this offer a useful window into how the yards were promoted to a national audience, showing the pens, rail lines and bustling labor that made Chicago the center of the American meat trade. The Union Stock Yards opened in 1865 and remained a symbol of industrial Chicago well into the twentieth century.
