Few Chicago buildings carry as much of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition as the Field Museum, which stood on the lakefront in Grant Park when this glass-plate negative was made around 1905. The white neoclassical hall began as the Palace of Fine Arts for the fair, and it was given over to natural history collections after the exposition closed. The institution took the name Field Museum of Natural History in 1905, the year of this view, honoring merchant Marshall Field, whose gift helped establish it. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this plate, was known for its views of American cities and landmarks.
