The New Marshall Field Building was the department store's home on the corner of State and Washington streets in Chicago, and this print preserves how it looked when it appeared in the Architectural Record in February 1896. The design came from D.H. Burnham & Co., the firm led by Daniel Burnham, whose work helped define the commercial architecture of the era. Marshall Field & Company was one of the largest retailers in the country, and its building was a showpiece of the period's steel-frame construction and large display windows. The plate was a photomechanical reproduction, a method that let magazines carry architectural views like this one to a wide readership.
