The sign on the building at right reads "A.M. Rothschild & Co.," a clothing and dry goods retailer that had a store on State Street, the main commercial thoroughfare of downtown Chicago. The view is a glass-plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns and cities for commercial sale around the turn of the twentieth century. Dated between 1895 and 1910, it captures a period when State Street was crowded with department stores, shops, and streetcar traffic, and the storefronts show how the district presented itself to shoppers.
