Food relief is the focus of this 1911 scene, which records a commissary set up to feed people during the Chicago garment workers' strike. Many strikers had walked off the job in 1910 with no wages to fall back on, so unions and local supporters ran kitchens and distribution points that supplied meals and staples to families. The walkout drew tens of thousands of mostly immigrant needle workers from the city's clothing shops, and the relief effort shows how much of their endurance depended on community support rather than paychecks.
