Few images from the period capture a sporting event on this scale as clearly as this stereograph of the Frank Gotch and George Hackenschmidt title match in Chicago on September 4, 1911. Its open-air ring and crowded grandstand show how large professional wrestling had become, drawing paying crowds that rivaled baseball games. Hackenschmidt, the Estonian-born "Russian Lion," had long been unbeaten, so the contest drew wide interest when Gotch, the American champion from Iowa, took the title. The card was published by E. W. Kelley of Chicago and copyrighted in October 1911, one of many stereo views sold to a public eager for images of the event.
