The Sherman House was one of Chicago's best-known hotels, and this stereograph shows its remains after the fire that tore through the city's center in October 1871. The blaze burned for roughly three days and destroyed much of the downtown business district, leaving broad stretches of brick walls and rubble. P.B. Greene made the card as a stereo view, meant to be seen in pairs through a stereoscope, a popular way to see distant places and recent events in the 1870s. Looking closely, the viewer can see how little of the hotel's structure survived.
