Court-House Square, in the middle of downtown Chicago, is the setting here, with the public buildings in flames and crowds gathered in the open space around them. The wood engraving was based on a sketch by the magazine's Chicago correspondent and ran in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper on October 28, 1871, about three weeks after the fire broke out on October 8. The blaze destroyed more than 3 square miles of the city and left roughly 100,000 people homeless. Seeing it in a New York weekly shows how quickly readers across the country received images of the disaster.
