The ruins pictured here are of the Cook County Courthouse, which stood at the corner of Clark and Randolph streets in the heart of Chicago's downtown. The Great Chicago Fire broke out on the night of October 8, 1871, and burned for roughly two days, destroying about 3.3 square miles of the city and leaving many public buildings reduced to shells. This stereograph was made as the city was beginning to sort through the wreckage, and paired views like this one were sold to a public eager to see the damage for themselves. The courthouse's gutted walls stand out as a stark reminder of how much of the civic core was lost.
