Two scenes share this sheet: a crowd waiting for news outside the Hoffman House in New York, and a view from the 1880 Republican convention in Chicago. The engraving ran in The Daily Graphic on April 18, 1888, the day Roscoe Conkling, the New York senator and Stalwart leader, died, so the Hoffman House panel shows onlookers anxiously awaiting word of his condition. The Chicago panel recalls the convention where Conkling's faction pushed hard for Ulysses S. Grant's bid for a third term, a fight that defined much of his later political reputation.
