Few party gatherings of the era were drawn as closely as the Republican National Convention in Chicago, and this wood engraving, made from a sketch by Frank H. Taylor, shows the scene as a *Harper's Weekly* artist recorded it. The convention met in Chicago in June 1880 and nominated Ohio congressman James A. Garfield for president on the thirty-sixth ballot. *Harper's* relied on artists who sketched on the spot and sent their drawings to engravers, so the picture offers a close-up view of the proceedings. The record's date is uncertain, so the scene may reflect a different moment than the caption suggests.
