This lithograph marks the 1888 National Republican Convention in Chicago, where delegates chose Benjamin Harrison as their presidential nominee. Harrison, a Republican from Indiana, was the grandson of President William Henry Harrison, and he went on to win the election that November. The print also features Abraham Lincoln, a fitting pairing because Chicago had hosted the Republican convention in 1860, when Lincoln was nominated. Images like this one show how civic boosters and printmakers used the city's role as a convention host to promote both Chicago and the party's heritage.
