The six prints in this set were made from sketches by G.A. Coffin and ran in *Harper's Weekly* on July 14, 1894, on page 657. They date to the Pullman Strike, which began as a wage dispute at the Pullman railcar works on Chicago's South Side and grew into a national boycott of trains that carried Pullman cars. By early July, federal troops had arrived in the city, and the magazine's artists were recording the disorder in its streets and rail yards. Because the images were drawn for a weekly and reproduced by a photomechanical process, they show how readers across the country followed the strike through pictures as well as newspaper accounts.
