This color lithograph promotes the Chicago & Alton Railroad's "palace reclining-chair route," a sales pitch that leaned on the comfort of the sleeping and parlor cars then coming into fashion on long-distance trains. The Chicago & Alton linked Chicago with St. Louis and Kansas City, and rail companies competed hard for travelers by advertising their rolling stock. The poster was printed by Ballin & Liebler, a New York lithography firm, and it reflects the period's taste for bold color and eye-catching commercial art. It is a useful window onto how railroads sold travel as luxury in the late 1800s.
