Few railroad prints of the early 1880s tie the whole globe to a single line, which sets this chromolithograph from the Chicago firm Swain & Lewis apart. Its subjects name the Illinois Central Railroad, whose main line ran from Chicago south toward the Gulf of Mexico, and the scene combines locomotives and passengers with a globe. Chicago lithographers produced many colorful prints like this in the 1880s, when railroads promoted their routes and the idea of a connected world. The record does not make clear whether Charles I. Felthousen drew the design, held the copyright, or did both.
