This photograph shows the Chicago, one of four Douglas World Cruisers the U.S. Army Air Service sent on the first attempt to fly around the world. The aircraft was named for the city, and its name is printed on the record as the airplane numbered 2 in the fleet. The 1924 flight left from Seattle in spring and covered the globe by way of Alaska, Asia, Europe, and the North Atlantic, with stops for repairs and replacement parts along the route. Only the Chicago and one other plane completed the circuit, which made the machine a notable example of early long-distance aviation.
