Ellen M. Henrotin stands in this three-quarter length portrait, turned slightly to the right, as she appeared in 1893, the year she served as vice president of the World's Congress of Women. That congress was one of the many gatherings held alongside the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and it brought together women from many countries and fields to discuss their work and their rights. The photograph was made by Stein and Rösch, a Chicago studio, and printed on an imperial card, a large mount that studios favored in the 1890s for formal portraits of public figures. Henrotin was a prominent Chicago clubwoman, and the picture reflects the dignified style of the period's civic portraiture.
