The print's most distinctive feature is its pairing of a globe with railroad imagery, which fits its title, *The world's railroad scene*, and suggests rail travel reaching across the whole earth. The subjects name the Illinois Central Railroad, whose main line ran south from Chicago toward New Orleans, and the locomotives and passengers tie the image to that company's Illinois routes. Chicago lithographers produced many colorful advertising and display prints in the 1880s, when chromolithography was especially popular. The record leaves Charles I. Felthousen's role unclear, as either artist or copyright claimant.
