This poster promotes the Chicago & Alton Railroad's "palace reclining-chair route," a selling point aimed at travelers who wanted comfort on long trips between Chicago and points south and west. In the late 1800s, railroads competed by advertising luxurious passenger cars, and reclining seats were a sign of the upgraded service that drew riders away from rivals. The color lithograph was printed by Ballin & Liebler, a New York firm that produced many railroad and commercial posters in this period. Its bold color and promotional wording show how railroads used large printed images to build public confidence in their trains.
