Interior views of railroad coaches were a common subject for the Detroit Publishing Company, and this one shows a chair car on the Chicago and Alton Railroad, a line that carried passengers between Chicago and St. Louis. Chair cars were coaches fitted with individual reclining armchairs, usually sold with a surcharge above the standard fare, and they offered a more comfortable seat for daytime travel. The company's photographers produced views like this for catalogs and promotional booklets. This negative records a photograph copyrighted in 1900, so it is a copy of an earlier image rather than an original exposure.
