Interior views of a buffet car on the Chicago and Alton Railroad, a line that linked Chicago with St. Louis and Kansas City, were part of the Detroit Publishing Company's railroad work around 1900. A buffet car combined a lounge with a serving counter, letting passengers get light meals and drinks without leaving the train. Railroads commissioned views like this to show off comfort and polished woodwork to travelers choosing how to make their trips. The large 8 by 10 inch glass negative preserves fine detail that makes it useful to historians of rail travel.
